Recognized Authorities in Athletic Ministry

You have the opportunity to engage a chaplain that is a 23 year veteran of the Green Bay Packers.

Phillip D. Sparks, PhD.

Dr. Sparks has been involved in ministry for the past 40 years as a Christian Caregiver. A graduate of both Purdue and DePauw Universities he is a certified Christian Counselor by Elijah House in Spokane, Washington.

He worked as the leader of a student Christian organization at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and served six years as the chaplain of the Murray State Racer football team under Houston Nutt.

He has assisted in the professional work of various Christian Counseling Organizations in Murray, Kentucky and Lafayette, Indiana. He has mentored both boys and men assisting in their emotional development.

Steven G. Newman

Steve has worked with coaches from elementary and recreation leagues, to high school, college and professional levels for the past 40 years. Having raised four sons and being both father and coach he has learned much about the coaching process.

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse in 1971,
Steve joined the staff of the Athletic Division of Campus Crusade for Christ where he has worked with college coaches at the University of Oklahoma and Miami of Ohio, high school coaches in Orange County California and served as the chaplain of the Green Bay Packers for 23 years.

Life Coaching Consultants provides a newsletter twice each month that will include a devotion that can be adapted for use by a coach or chaplain. Each issue will include upcoming events and informative articles especially for the coaching professionals. The newsletter is a free service to coaches of America.

During my coaching experiences at Murray State, Boise State, Arkansas and Ole Miss, I have become aware of the issues that athletes bring with them to our programs because of there varied backgrounds. When I was at Murray State I solicited Dr. Sparks to develop and implement a plan that he and Steve Newman have now captured in a book entitled, Coaching Beyond the X’s and O’s.

I know of several players that were helped tremendously from that plan including one of my assistant coaches. In my opinion, both coaches and players would benefit greatly from their seminars. It is more than a Bible study, because it looks at the backgrounds of individuals, thereby allowing the development of a personalized plan that addresses individual needs.
